Lichens CitiSci Featured by the Environmental Protection Agency for Air Quality Awareness Week 2023

I am so excited to share that Lichens CitiSci was featured by the EPA during Air Quality Awareness Week May 1st - 5th, 2023. Each day of the week had a different focus, and Friday was Participatory Science. Take a look and check out other neat projects and see LCS in the spotlight!

Air Quality Matters

Equitable access and relevant engagement with air quality knowledge and monitoring efforts for non-experts is vital to ensure the longevity of the field and protection of our air. With Lichens CitiSci, a community science project engaging non-experts in lichen biomonitoring work, we support resource-strained air management efforts while making real world connections in local communities.

The thing about air is that it moves. That also means that pollutants in the air can travel vast distances causing harm to human health, our communities, the environment, and our future survival. Since air pollution moves, and can disproportionately impact communities and wilderness areas, having a better understanding of what is in the air and where it comes from can be useful in mitigation and policy efforts to protect and manage the air.

Air quality matters, and understanding pollutants in the air and how they harm living things can be challenging. It can also be difficult to make an argument with society that biodiversity matters, it is more accessible to make an argument that air quality matters because all living things breathe air and are impacted by air quality.
